This powerful fortress, built during the XIIIth Century by the de la Tour d’Auvergne family, has
thus been the property of both Queen Catherine de Medicis and
Queen Marguerite de Valois. The latter donated it to King Louis XIII to help him establish his authority which, at the time, was still very fragile.
It relives today for your pleasure.
A perfect example of a large medieval chateau remarkably restored, this imposing fortress stands today as a witness of
the military architecture of the Middle Ages: moat, ramparts, rounds way, fortified towers and machicolation. It was enlarged and continually embellished until the XVth century under the influence of the Renaissance.
The park and its regular gardens which are in the course of restoration, were first created at these
times.
A magical place to discover.
Occupied by it’s new owners, it is now open to a few privileged guests who can enjoy the large size or the charm of it’s guestrooms, access to all of which, is through the court of
honnor. Bathed in history and havens of peace, they enjoy the beautiful views of the courtyard, the park and gardens or the village with it’s church – one of the five major Romanesque churches of the Auvergne. They make this private Home a truly charming place to stay.
In addition it can accommodate greater number of guests for receptions organized either in the historic halls or on the terraces overlooking the Parc des Volcans, or for visits of the property which has been classified as an Historic Monument since 1889 and open to the public.
